Gerardo Gomez is a figurative painter based in San Antonio, Texas. After earning a BFA in Studio Art from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and living in Brooklyn, New York, he returned to Texas to pursue an MFA in Painting at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Working primarily in oil, but with drawing as the foundation, Gomez creates paintings that merge observation and imagination, drawing inspiration from renaissance art, the everyday, surrealism, and contemporary culture.
His paintings have been exhibited throughout Texas and internationally through artist residencies and exhibitions in Barcelona and Paris. Influenced by artists such as Caravaggio, Sargent, and Bernini, Gomez combines historical references with deeply personal narratives, creating works that invite viewers to reconsider ordinary moments as theatrical, psychological, and spiritual experiences.

The question I want to arise in the viewer is where my painting process begins. Through surreal symbolism and chromatic sensibility, a narrative unfolds through layered figures unveiled by light. I collage portraits and bodies of theatrics sensationalizing vignettes of personal experiences to revere absurdity and beauty. The message I want to get across is more so the question “Who am I?” or “What are We?” through explosions of color, vulnerability, subversive realities, and unapologetic wonder.
